History of the Minuwangoda Urban Council library
At a time mot a single library was available in the area, this library was founded in the year 1966 with the objective of further fuelling the unprecedented public interest generated by the free distraction of school text books among schoolchildren of poverty stricken families living in the town council area. Mr. D.B. Wijetunga who served then as the Chairman of the Town Council together with the other members of the council established the public library in a section of the Town Council office and later on it was shifted to a small building located at the Parakrama Grounds. At the time Parakrama Grounds was just a small park.
On 01st January 1970, the Minuwangoda Town Council was elevated to the status of an Urban Council and the library was moved to new premises at No.24, Samarakkody Mawatha. The building in that premises was an official quarters belonging to the Urban Council. Subsequently, some changes were made to this building to make it more suitable for a library. Samarakkody Mawatha too was later renamed as Siriwardana Mawatha and the library was named as Siriwardana Public Library. At present, the library is housed at the upper floor of the Urban Council building at Siriwardana Mawatha.
