Maternity and child support project
Minuwangoda Urban Council donates a pack of essential items annually needed by pregnant mothers of low income families when admitted to hospitals for delivery as maternity assistance and a child assistance kit for new born babies as child assistance. This project is implemented in a transparent manner with recommendations of the officers of the Medical Officer of Health and Grama Niladharis certified by the Divisional Secretary and with the approval of the secretary/ Chairman of the Urban Council.
Support for the community based organizations
With a view to strengthening community based organizations to bring about prosperity of the community and spiritual development through the regularization of development functions as well as public utility services and welfare activities in the area, sets of essential items and equipment are granted to them annually.
Project for women’s empowerment
The Minuwangoda Urban Council conducts projects annually to encourage women to take up self employment with the objective of uplifting living standard of the family. Women are empowered through this project with the involvement of female members of community councils, members of women’ societies and mothers of children attending preschools in the area.
Community awareness projects
Our urban council conducts a host of community awareness programmes throughout the year with the aim of creating a discreet and knowledgeable community with insight and understanding.

Promoting interest towards literature
In collaboration with the public library, diverse educational and creative programmes are formulated and conducted by the Urban Council with the objective of enhancing artistic taste and literary awareness of the people of the area.

- Conducting literary competitions (creative writing and speech competitions).
- Conducting drama competitions.
- Felicitating prominent artistes and writers from Minuwangoda who enriched field of art during the literary month.
- Presenting awards to winners of literary competitions.
- Conducting musical programmes closely connected with our heritage and legacies.
Narcotics and alcohol prevention programmes
With the noble objective of creating a “country devoid of narcotics and alcohol”, the Minuwangoda Urban Council established a drug prevention unit in the year 2015. It is tasked with the preparation of an annual plan incorporating programmes and activities for eradicating drug menace and conducts community awareness programmes in tandem with the community councils (‘Praja Mandala’), women’s societies, public institutions and the readers’ society of the public library.
- Conducting various awareness programmes targeting places where people gather in large numbers.
- Displaying anti-narcotics posters and banners in public places.
- Maintaining a notice board on the prevention of drug.
- Conducting awareness programme for school children to prevent them becoming victims of drug menace.
- Creating awareness on the ill-effects of drug and alcohol consumption using playlets.
